Hasegawa 1/48 P-40E Warhawk 'Prisoner of War' (52104/SP304)
Here is another P-40, hot on the heels of last month's P-40C. This is the 'Prisoner of War' boxing of Hasegawa's P-40E Warhawk. In addition to the decals representing a captured aircraft, the kit also included the decals from the Aleutian Tiger boxing (kit 09789), as well as a photocopy of the placement instructions, and I decided to use those instead, and to save the captured decals for another build.
Hasegawa's P-40 series has a couple of inserts to represent multiple variants, so I attached those to the fuselage halves before putting the fuselage halves together. That worked well.
The bottom is XF-53 Neutral Grey. It went on very rough. According to Tom Cleaver's build of an Aleutian Tiger in 1/32 scale, the olive drab on the top should have more green than the usual, so I used XF-58 Olive Green. I used Eduard's EX058 mask on the canopy; it fit well.
I have an aftermarket set of decals that also represents an Aleutian Tiger, but I decided to use the kit decals instead. I had lots of trouble with them. I had to use very hot water, and had to let the decals soak for a long time to get them to work. I also had lots of silvering, but to be fair that was due to my poor painting. The decals also wrinkled heavily.
I gave serious thought to tossing this build in the trash after taking the photos below, but for now it sits on the shelf.
